The Return

In the shadows of your past, I stand,

A heart that's weary, but understands,

The age-old tale of love set free,

Yet weary now, of this decree.

For I've been that girl, a hundred times,

The one they leave, the one that rhymes,

With all their dreams and grand regrets,

But always the one they can't forget.

I've seen them wander, then return,

With lessons learned, a heart to yearn,

But why, oh why, must it be this way,

That they must leave before they stay?

I've grown tired of this endless game,

Of being the one they return to claim,

When they travel the world, and finally see,

The worth I had, the love in me.

No more, I say, no more, it's true,

I won't be the girl they once knew,

Only to find, when they return,

That they should have stayed,

They should have learned.

I long to be the one they choose,

Not the one they later muse,

About, regretting what they've done,

When they should have known, I was the one.

I don't need love that fades and dies,

Or someone who can't recognize,

That from the start, I'm worth it all,

I won't be the girl who takes the fall.

So if you must walk away, please, just go,

For it's my heart's desire, to only know,

A love that's constant, true, and bright,

One that sees my worth at first sight.
