Surviving the Holidays with Humor

I was at a job interview a few years ago and the interviewer asked "How would you deal with a stressful situation?" My answer was "With humor." It must have been the right answer, because I got the job (yay!) I am the person that will tell a joke at a funeral, the one you cannot sit next to when the class is getting reprimanded. I will be the one to make a funny sarcastic remark when the project is late and everyone is pulling their air out.
As a kid, I was the designated family clown. When my brother and sister were in bad moods, I'd whip out my best jokes, make funny faces, or do something utterly ridiculous to turn their frowns upside down. I never knew if I was doing it intentionally to defuse tension or if it was just a quirky talent I'd developed.
Fast forward to my adult life, and I'm still the go-to person for a dose of humor, even in the most serious situations. When the project is running late, and my colleagues are on the verge of pulling their hair out, I'm the one who can't resist making a funny, sarcastic remark. It's like my superpower, and it does wonders to break the tension in the room.
Why do I do it? Because I simply love making people smile and laugh. There's something magical about seeing a person's face light up, even in the darkest of moments. Laughter has this incredible power to bring people together, to lighten the load, and to remind us that life's hiccups are just temporary blips on the radar. Laughter is my love language.
So, in the midst of holiday stress, consider giving humor a place at the table. Stress is just another uninvited guest crashing the holiday party, but laughter is the ultimate antidote. When the turkey is overcooked, the in-laws are overbearing, and the wrapping paper is over your head, remember that a good laugh is the perfect recipe for a joyful holiday season.
If you're terrible at telling jokes, pull out a Christmas movie and throw it on the television...I never miss a Christmas season without watching Christmas Vacation, Christmas with the Kranks, or the beloved Home Alone.
May your holidays be filled with warmth, love and lots and lots and lots of laughter!
