Happy Halloween! What are your plans for the day? Since it's a weekday, did you do your celebrating over the weekend? My plans changed at the last minute. I had been planning on attending an event - costume required. I spent about a month deciding on and getting everything ready. I was planning to be Little Red Riding Hood." On Friday, I ironed my costume and put everything together, but I wasn't really feeling it anymore - as I mentioned in yesterday's post, so when I woke on Saturday morning, I decided I wasn't going and I ended up staying home...and that's okay.
Instead, I put on my jammies, made some hot cocoa, lit some candles and watched the movie "Practical Magic." It was perfect. I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. It was pure bliss.
It got me thinking about how life is full of surprises and hidden treasures. Much like trick-or-treating,
Last week, I was leaving my house to go somewhere. I got in the car, which had been parked under a tree. My car was blanketed in leaves, of the most glorious colors. When I sat behind the wheel, I looked up and the sun was shining through the leaves...it was like a kaleidoscope. It literally took my breath away. I sat there for a moment just taking in the beauty of it, and was grateful that I didn't miss it.
A simple mundane moment which turned into magic. It's just a reminder that we can discover moments of joy in unexpected places. Magic isn't limited to special occasions, it's woven into the fabric of our everyday experiences.
As we finish up October and head into November's month of gratitude, let's practice a little gratitude in advance. Take a moment to think about the small things that bring joy to your life. Maybe it's that first sip of coffee in the morning, a good book or an unexpected evening to yourself.
Our minds often wander to the past or the future - we remember times when we "used to be" happy or to the future "I'll be happy when..." but the true treats in life are often found right here in the present. Slow down, savor the now, and enjoy the beauty of what's happening around you.
This Halloween, I challenge you to seek out and find at least one "treat" in your day, no matter how small it may seem. Let me know what you find in the comments. Let's inspire each other to celebrate the sweetness of life. This world seems really spooky right now, but life's joy is still all around us. All we need to do is open our hearts and embrace it.
