How do you know when it's time to look for a new job? It can vary from person to person, and your circumstances play a significant role. However, there are some signs that to be on the lookout for to see if it might be time to dust off your resume:
1. Lack of growth or learning opportunities: If you feel stuck in your current position with limited opportunities for advancement, development or skill enhancement…it might be time…
2. Job dissatisfaction: If you feel unhappy, unfulfilled, or unchallenged at work – more times than not - despite efforts to address the issues, it might be a signal to seek something more satisfying.
3. Toxic work environment: If your workplace has a toxic culture, where there is constant conflict, unhealthy competition, lack of support, or a general negative atmosphere, it can 100% impact your well-being and productivity, point towards the need for change.
4. Compensation/recognition: If you believe you are not being compensated fairly for your skills, experience, or contributions AND you have attempted to address these issues with no success, you might want to see what other opportunities are available to you.
5. Company instability: If you’re seeing layoffs, financial struggles, senior leaders jumping ship or a change in strategy, it would definitely be in your interest to start getting your name out there.
6. Personal or lifestyle: Since Covid, people’s views of work/life balance have changed. Many do not want to be in an office five days per week. With so much opportunity to work remotely, you might be thinking of relocating or starting a family, or even going back to school. If your current job doesn’t line up with your personal life choices or desires, it might be time to find something that aligns better.
7. Stress or burnout: There’s bound to be periods of stress in any job, but if you consistently experience high levels of stress, exhaustion, or burnout that negatively impact your physical and mental health, it's crucial to prioritize your well-being and consider a change that promotes a healthier work-life balance.
8. Instinct: Sometimes, when you know – you just know. If the voice inside your head keeps telling you it’s time for a change – consider your pros and cons and make a decision.
Our jobs are where we spend the bulk of our day. It’s important to be happy/satisfied doing it. However, switching jobs is a significant decision, and it's important to put some serious thought into it before jumping ship. Do your research, assess your options – maybe talk it over with a trusted friend or mentor.
Good luck!
