Remember that Michael Keaton movie from the 80's-Mr. Mom? Kenny, the kid in the film, had a security blanket he called his "woobie." If you haven't seen it, it's sweet, heartwarming, and introduced the term "woobie" to the world. Even the military couldn't resist it...
The Armed Forces began handing out these ponchos that had a liner designed to keep the soldiers warm. But the ponchos turned into something more than just practical gear. They became an emotional support system for the troops-their very own woobie.
Now, let me tell you about my adventure with my woobie. Picture this: January 2022, I'm driving from sunny Florida to Maryland. I grab this fleece jacket that my former employer had given me. It was sitting in my closet untouched because, well, Florida. Little did I know that this jacket would become my ultimate woobie.
That night I ended up sleeping in my car, scared out of my wits. I pulled on the jacket for warmth, but also because, you know, fear does some weird things to you. Since then, that jacket has been my constant companion, my trusted woobie.
As kids, we clung to our security blankets and soft toys when fear crept in. But, as adults, bringing your security blanket into the boardroom is probably frowned upon. However, sometimes that woobie craving sneaks back into our lives unexpectedly. Maybe it's a ratty old T-shirt or a lucky baseball cap. It could even be a ritual you perform before facing a daunting task, like meditation, a walk, or prayer. And yes, sometimes your woobie might be a person who brings you comfort and safety just by being around.
Life's a crazy ride. We find ourselves caught in ups and downs, like an emotional roller coaster. But our woobie becomes our little sanctuary amidst all the chaos. My jacket started out as a practical tool to keep me warm, but as life got tougher, I found myself clutching it tighter, almost like a bandage holding me together. And guess what? That's exactly what I needed at the time. Now, that jacket feels like a warm, reassuring hug - and who wouldn't want that every day?
In a world that glorifies strength and self-sufficiency, having a woobie allows us to embrace our vulnerabilities without shame. Trust me, we all need moments of comfort and reassurance. And contrary to what you might think - a woobie doesn't hinder your personal growth; it can actually help you grow and improve, it becomes a safe space where you can explore your inner self, face fears, and understand your emotions. It's like personal development boot camp!
So, instead of hiding your woobie like it's some embarrassing secret, hold it close and celebrate the comfort it brings. Whether your woobie is an object, a habit, or a person, it represents the coziness and security we all crave in this topsy-turvy world. It's a source of solace in the craziest moments, and it teaches us to accept our vulnerabilities as a natural part of being human.
Where's your woobie?
