Long before Tony Robbins became the mega author, coach, speaker and philanthropist that he is today, I became a believer. He was known by his late night infomercials as “the guy with the teeth” – and was selling his personal development package, “Personal Power.” It was selling for a couple hundred dollars at time – way above my price range, so I would just watch the infomercial over and over again. It was absolutely because of him that I became a coach (I do not coach professionally, now).

The very first thing I remember him saying is “success leaves clues” – and to summarize, he said to find people that have, do or are what you want to be, do or have and literally just copy what they did. Say you want to lose weight. Who are you going to ask for advice? Someone that has lost a lot of weight and kept it off, or the guy sitting on the sofa, trolling everyone on social media, while downing a bag of chocolate chip cookies? Hopefully that answer is easy for you 😊…but then, comes the hard part – YOU have to put into action the plan. YOU have to get off the sofa and put those cookies back in the pantry…and get moving.

The second thing I took from him is – “never leave the site of setting a goal without taking a step in its direction” – I am a huge proponent of goal setting. The minute I put a goal on the paper – I take a step towards it. A new/better job is your goal? Take action towards that goal immediately. Update your resume. Make a new connection on LinkedIn. Answer an ad. Get an interview suit ready. Take ONE or more steps towards your goal.

My own advice…act “as if” you already have it. There’s an old adage “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” – it’s kind of the same thing. Dress, act, and most importantly, BELIEVE you already have that job. This is NOT “fake it til you make it” – quite the opposite. You know you have the skill. You know you have the experience. You know you have the heart for it. It's not enough to want it - you have to be it, feel it, OWN it! Don’t wait until you have the job to act like it. Act like it now – act as if that job is yours and no one else’s, and when you walk in for the interview or to ask for the promotion – they will know it too.

It may take a little bit of time to get used to this “new” you. In the morning, stand in front of the mirror and take a good look at yourself. Stand up tall. Stand in your power. Say, in an authoritative voice, as you look yourself in the eyes: “I am (your name) and I am (whatever position you are seeking. Say it one time, a hundred times - one day or every day until you ARE that. You may think it’s hokey…but I promise you, it works.

Go get it!
