Home Is Not A Place

One of my favorite movies of all time is the movie “Sisters” with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. It’s ridiculously funny, and if you are a sister and had a sister growing up, you can probably relate. I think it would still hold true for brothers, as well…I highly recommend – if just for the laughs.

As I continue to try to find my place in this world (you’d think I’d have that figured out by now!) a line from the movie kept creeping into my head yesterday. The line was “Home is not a place, it’s a feeling” No matter what I was doing, it just kept popping into my mind.

I’ve been so homesick for Florida, and was recently offered an amazing opportunity that would have allowed me to move back immediately…yet, I didn’t jump on it. Why? Because I think, deep down, it isn’t Florida that I really miss. Don’t get me wrong, I miss the heat, and the beach, and the heat (and Publix!), but I really miss how happy I was – and I don’t think that had anything to do with the location.

Home can be any place where you feel comfort, where you feel understood and accepted. It’s a place where people can be themselves – without judgement, where memories are created. Home is a place where we build meaningful relationships. Home can be anywhere – or anyone that you have a deep connection with…and your physical location has so little to do with that.

So although I live in a beautiful condo, I still find myself homeless…searching.

Where do you call home?
