We all know (and love) the iconic song "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. It's a timeless anthem sung at many a girl's night out! During the time when this song was popular, my besties at the time, Mary, Grace, Kathleen and I were at Six Flags, Great Adventure in New Jersey. They had a recording booth, and we recorded Cyndi's song. They asked us for the name of our "group"...it was during the 80's and 3 of the 4 of us worked on Wall Street...our group name was "The Sleaze Wenches" - don't ask - and please don't judge! Anyway, we were waiting outside to pick up our demo - when we heard them announce the song over the loudspeaker..."And here, with Girls Just Wanna Have Fun...The Sleaze Wenches!) The four of us fell on the ground in hysterical, embarrassed fits of laughter. I cannot ever hear that song without reliving that awesome moment!
During a recent interview I saw with Cyndi Lauper, she revealed that she was 30 years old when that song was released. She would never discuss her age, but when asked she would respond back "What do I look like - some kind of car? You wanna look under the hood? Kick the tires?" Her attitude towards age and life in general serves as a reminder that it's never too late to have fun and pursue your dreams.
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is not just a song; it's an expression of the joy of living life to the fullest. Cyndi's colorful personality and infectious energy embody the spirit of fun - encouraging us - no - daring us to do the same. She inspires us to embrace the childlike wonder within us and find happiness in the simplest pleasures.
Let's take a page from Cyndi's book and remember that it's never too late to have fun, follow our dreams, and live life to the fullest. After all, "it ain't over til it's over, and it's never over until you give in...and you don't ever have to give in."
