Easy Like Sunday Mornings…

As a kid, I always loved Sundays. My Dad worked 7 days a week, but on Sundays he didn’t leave for work until noonish, so he was usually home for breakfast. We would go to church early and come home and have breakfast as a family. Most of the times just scrambled eggs…occasionally, we would have rolls from the corner bakery instead of just plain toast. It didn’t matter what we had. Daddy was home. Sundays were easy. The stores weren’t open on Sunday, so there was nothing to do but play. Read. Watch cartoons.

As an adult, when I met my (ex) husband, Sundays were about dinner. An Italian Sunday dinner started around 2pm and went until about 7 or 8pm. When I got divorced, my sister married an Italian, so I just switched houses – but the tradition continued. The stores were opened now, but unless we needed something for dinner, no one (in our family) was shopping. Sundays were for family.

When did it change? When did we go from “the day of rest” to just go go go all the time? It seems there is always something to do. Too much time at the office during the week to do anything that needs to be done at home. Weekends become all about home maintenance and errands…is this just me?

How I would love to put on a big pot of pasta and meatballs and sausage and have friends sit around the table and just talk and eat and have great wine for hours and not think about the work that awaits us in the morning at the office.

What are you doing this Sunday morning? Are you preparing to finish chores you couldn’t get to yesterday? Will you spend time relaxing? Will you get to spend time with loved ones? Whatever your day, I hope it’s fantastic.

We need more Sundays.
