When faced with tough decisions, how do you know which way to move forward? Some decisions are easy - pizza for breakfast? YES!! Some are difficult - choosing which bill to pay when funds are low. Other decisions seem impossible to make, but choices must be made.
To make tough decisions, thoughtfulness is the key. Don't rush. Consider all perspectives, especially when it's a personal decision.
In 2010, I faced a daunting choice. My 86-year-old father was in San Diego, living with his ailing partner. Visiting them sparked the idea of moving them to Charlotte, where I lived and had recently started my own business. After considering for a bit, they declined to relocate. As time passed, their situation worsened. I felt the weight of responsibility. Should I move to San Diego? But what about my thriving business?
I did everything you're supposed to do when faced with a tough decision. I defined the goal, I researched, I weighed alternatives. I evaluated pros and cons, thought about long-term consequences and I sought the opinions of others.
A trusted mentor gave me advice: sit with each side of the decision. So I spent a day imagining life in San Diego and caring for my Dad. I spent the next day considering staying in Charlotte. The answer was clear.
I can't even fathom why it took that long. Caring for my dad outweighed everything else. When I told my dad of my decision he said "Sweetie, it's not your responsibility to take care of me." My answer came directly from my heart...it was not my responsibility...it was my privilege. I moved to San Diego without regrets. We eventually returned to Charlotte and I cared for my dad for seven years. It remains my privilege to have done that for him - and to this date, the best decision I have ever made in my life.
In tough decisions, trust your gut, those feelings inside you. They will never lead you down the wrong path.
You won't regret it.
