I’m starting to cobble together a plan for my next chapter, which is probably a surefire cue to the Universe to step in and say “not so fast there, young lady!” I wrote the following to myself as a reminder – I thought maybe someone else could use it as well…
While planning is an essential step to achieving your goals, you’d best be prepared for unexpected challenges, setbacks and gut-punches. Hopefully they won’t happen to you, but if they come when you’re not expecting them – it will be much worse – trust me!
Challenges and setbacks are a natural part of any journey towards achieving goals, but it’s how you handle them that will ultimately define your success. Stay flexible – be open to adapting your plan as needed.
Try to stay positive. I know this is easier said than done when it seems like the world is crumbling around you – but if you remember that you have overcome every hurdle in your life this far – you will be able to overcome this one as well.
Take some time and analyze the problem/s…it would be great if you had a support system to run ideas by and gain guidance and advice from, but that is not always possible – and you will have to rely on your own problem-solving skills. You can do this!
Be patient. Nothing that is meant for you will pass you by. Be committed to your plan and keep moving forward – even when things might seem slow or stagnant.
Take care of yourself – when we’re in a stressful situation, we tend to forget to take care of ourselves. This is the opposite of what is needed. Take time to care for yourself mentally and physically. Get a work out in and have some fun…go get a massage or a mani/pedi. Relax!
Learn from your setbacks. I learned a lot of hard lessons last year. Analyze what went wrong and what you could have done differently. Any challenge that you have learned from, no matter how difficult, is a lesson worth learning.
Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your achievements along the way. You don’t need to wait until you’ve completed the goal…celebrate the small steps – it creates momentum and boosts your motivation to keep going.
